Lead, aluminum, mercury, pesticides, even illicit drugs…

These are things you’d never put anywhere near your body.

Yet somehow they’ve snuck their way in through something that’s supposed to be healthy: supplements.

Just last month, Consumer Reports did an investigation on protein powders and found that some of the most popular protein powder brands tested alarmingly high for levels of heavy metals.

Plant protein powders were the worst offenders - with some powders having 9x more lead compared to whey-based alternatives.

The biggest culprits:

  • Naked Nutrition Vegan Mass Gainer

  • Huel Black Edition

  • Garden of Life Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein

  • Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder

The scary thing is, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Athletes have failed drug tests from tainted supplements.

Why?

Supplements are rather unregulated.

Unlike food, the FDA doesn’t regulate what goes into supplements before they’re sold.

This means it’s up to the company to test for contaminants and, as you guessed, many don’t.

Testing is expensive. So are high-quality ingredients. That’s why corners get cut.

I hope I haven’t scared you away from supplements totally.

My goal is to make you aware and equip you with the right tool in your tool belt in making it easier to choose high-quality supplements.

But before we go into how to find them, let’s first look at why choosing the right supplement is so hard.

It Always Comes Back To Social Media

Everyone nowadays is selling supplements.

Or at least “recommending” them (and getting a kickback from each sale).

Drew Barrymore promotes a natural supplement for menopause.

Get this…Maria listens to a podcast called “My Favorite Murder” where they talk about nothing that has to do with health and fitness. Yet, they recommend supplements.

And even crazier, my mom follows an influencer who is a decorator and yes, she recommends supplements.

You might ask, why they’re selling supplements?

Because the US supplement market is worth over $1 trillion…with a T

That’s a lot of incentive for people to sell a product they don’t understand.

And while you may trust the person selling it, they likely don’t know what’s actually inside.

So that leaves you with two options…

Don’t buy any supplements.

Or take their word for it and risk it.

But I want to give you a third option - and it’s a smart one.

How To Find High-Quality Supplements

Whether you buy your supplements in a store, on Amazon, or from an influencer, 3 key factors apply:
purity, efficacy, and price.

1. Purity: What’s Not in It Matters Most

You want to look for these certifications on the label or website:

  • NSF Certified – Verified ingredients, screened for contaminants, safe for athletes.

  • Third-Party Tested – An independent lab verified what’s on the label.

  • CoA (Certificate of Analysis) – Bonus points if it’s published on their website.

  • Transparent Labeling – Avoid “proprietary blends.” They hide how much of each ingredient you’re getting (often underdosed).

    • Here’s an example below…you have no idea how much of each ingredient you’re getting.

2. Efficacy: Does It Actually Work?

If a supplement passes the purity test, it might not be effective.

Why? Many companies sprinkle trace amounts of multiple ingredients just to make impressive labels — but the doses are too small to matter. Just like in the photo below.

And best of all, you don’t have to be a formulator to know what an effective dose is.

Simply Google “clinically studied dose for [ingredient name].” and it will give you exactly what to look for. An example is “scientific dose for creatine” = 5 grams.

3. Price: You Get What You Pay For

If a supplement costs half of what others do, there’s usually a reason.

Cheap often means:

  • Inferior ingredient forms

  • Low doses

  • No testing

For example, a vitamin D supplement at Walmart is $25 for 250 servings. A great deal right?

Not when you find out that a high-quality Vitamin D supplement should cost closer to $20 for 60 servings.

My Trusted Supplement Brands

I’ve spent the last 10 years testing supplements of all qualities (I’ve consumed more lead and mercury than I’d like to admit) and landed on these companies are my favorites:

  • Santa Cruz Paleo

  • Life Extension

  • Thorne

  • Revitalized Supplements (wait, what!? 🎉)

Yep - I’m launching a supplement brand called Revitalized Supplements!

Here’s our first product proof below.

This is something I’ve wanted to build for the past 3 years and the timing never aligned…until now.

My goal with this brand is simple - I want to create supplements that my mom, and other women like you, can use to solve their biggest challenges:

  • Muscle and bone strength

  • Unwanted weight gain

  • Less bloating

  • Better sleep

  • More energy

And my promise is simple: I’ll never sell anything I wouldn’t give to my mom.

That means every product will be pure, effective, and tested.

But here’s the thing…

And I want your help creating it.
