There's a reason your body doesn't respond the way it used to.
A reason why the same workouts that used to work, don't anymore. Why you feel like you're doing everything right but your body just…isn't listening.
It’s not you or your fault. I know it can feel that way but it’s not.
There’s actually a name for what it is.
It's something called anabolic resistance.
You've probably never heard that term before. And don’t worry, I won’t quiz you on what it is.
But once you understand it, everything you’ve been feeling and frustrated about will make sense.
What Is Anabolic Resistance?
Here's the simplest way I can explain it…
Picture your body like a sponge.
When you were in your 20s and 30s, you'd eat a little bit, do some movement, and your muscles would soak it all up. You wouldn’t feel sore and you felt tighter and toned.
Because that sponge was like a fresh one out of the package. Soft and absorbent.
But somewhere around 40, that sponge started to harden.
And even though you're still squeezing water onto it…
Trying new foods, new diets, and workouts.
But now, instead of soaking it up like you used to, the water just rolls right off.
Leaving you wondering, “will I ever feel like myself again?”
That's anabolic resistance.
Your muscles become resistant to the signal that maintains them and builds them stronger.
Like the sponge hardening and becoming resistant to absorbing water.
Don’t worry, the signal still exists.
But your body just needs you to open the facet more.
And this is the main reason why you feel like nothing's working anymore.
It’s not fair. No one told you this and instead, just blames it on “part of aging.”
And while anabolic resistance is a part of aging, it doesn’t mean you’re doomed.
Why This Happens After 40
Anabolic resistance isn't a crazy freak thing that only happens to a small percentage of women. It happens to every single one, including you, and there’s a real biological reason behind it.
As you move through your 40s, 50s, and beyond, a few things shift…as you know:
First, hormones like estrogen and progesterone decline. And both of these play a MAJOR role in how your muscles/strength respond to what you eat and exercise.
Second, your body becomes less efficient at using the protein you eat. In your 20s and 30s, 20 grams of protein used to be enough to help you maintain and even strengthen muscles. Now, your body might need 35-40 grams to get the same response.
This is the same idea of the sponge not being as absorbent anymore.
Third, inflammation generally increases. Even low-grade, chronic inflammation…the kind you can't always feel…makes your muscles even more resistant, hardening that sponge more.
Mother nature sure can be crazy, can’t she?
With all of this said, I’m going to reiterate something I already said.
None of this is your fault and you’re not doing anything wrong. In fact, it’s hard to do something wrong when you didn’t even know something existed in the first place!
But what it does mean is that the rules of the game have changed. What used to work doesn’t work anymore. And not only does it not work, it makes things worse.
The Mistake That Makes It Worse
I’m going to guess that a lot of the frustration you feel about your body is coming from this…
Most women respond to feeling like their body’s working against them by doing the two things that actually make anabolic resistance worse.
They exercise more.
And they eat less.
You might even be guilty of this. And if you are, it makes sense that you’d do this!
"If my body's not responding, I just need to try harder."
But here's what's actually happening when you do that…
When you exercise too much with hour-long cardio and 5-6 HIIT workouts per week, you're creating more stress and inflammation in your body. And remember how inflammation makes your muscles more resistant to building?
And then you add in under-eating. 1200 calories, skipping breakfast, and surviving on salads and willpower. You're restricting the very things your body needs to feel like yourself.
Another way to think of it is like this...
Your body’s are already resistant to maintain strength because of anabolic resistance. More exercise hardens the sponge even more and restricting what you eat turns the water off to a drip.
The result?
You're exhausted. You're body has new aches and pains. Your clothes don’t fit anymore. And your body holds onto everything it can because it thinks it's in survival mode.
Coaching women for the past 10 years, I've seen this more times than I can count. So many women have come to me exercising 5-6 days a week, eating 1,200 calories, and feeling more frustrated than ever. Because they were doing "all the right things" but feeling worse every month.
But the problem was never their effort, it was their strategy.
How To Win The Battle With Anabolic Resistance
So if what used to work no longer does, what should you do?
Only two things and they're simpler than you think!
1. More protein per meal.
Not just more protein overall…yes, that’s important too. But more protein per sitting. This is the part most women miss.
Because of anabolic resistance, your body needs a higher dose of protein at one time to help maintain and strengthen your muscles. Spreading 15 grams across 2-3 tiny meals won't cut it anymore.
You need 30-40 grams per meal. That's the threshold where your muscles start to soak it up.
What does that look like in real life?
2 palm-sized portions of chicken, fish, or meat
A cup of Greek yogurt with a scoop of protein powder
3-4 eggs with a side of cottage cheese
It doesn't have to be complicated, it just has to be enough.
2. Strength training where you get stronger every week.
Walking is great. Yoga is great. But neither one can help you battle anabolic resistance.
Your body needs to be challenged in a way that makes them rebuild stronger. That means making it progressively harder over time.
There’s good news…you don’t need to go to a gym or use heavy weights to do this:
Use weights that feel challenging for the last 2-3 reps
Strength train 2-3 days per week with a workout that is part of a program
Increase the weight, slow down the movement, or add a pause when things start to feel easy
These 3 bullets are the foundation for our Revitalized Strength System and exactly how our Revitalized clients strength train for only 15-minutes at home AND feel stronger every week!
The combination of enough protein and strength training is what opens the faucet and softens the sponge…allowing you to feel like yourself again.
Anabolic resistance happens to every woman after 40. The good news? Now you know what's going on and what to do about it.
So if aging comes knocking, tell it you've moved on. You're evolving now ◡̈
