If you want to feel energized again and not rely on coffee to get you through the day, today’s newsletter is for you.
Before we get into why you might not have energy and the ways to get it back, I think it makes sense to start with what energy really is.
You’ve probably never thought about it, and I didn’t either that much until recently.
Because when it’s talked about, we speak about it in abstract ways. And you can feel the energy but don’t always understand what it really is or how to get more of it.
I’m going to warn you…I’m a bit of a closet spiritual nerd. So we’re going to get in the spiritual-weeds for just a second…Ready to do this?
I look at energy as two different types.
There’s real, physical energy. The kind that comes from food…more specifically, calories.
This energy is needed for your body to function. If you’ve gone a long time without food and felt depleted and drained, that was your physical energy being low.
On the other hand, there’s metaphysical energy.
This is energy that comes from the universe. A more abstract form of energy.
This energy is hard to define…”what exactly is it? What does it look like?”
But you know how it feels…
Think back to the last time you woke up and just felt great. Your mind was working, you were in a great mood, and you felt motivated to be the best version of yourself.
This was a day where your metaphysical energy was high.
Now remember the opposite. A day where you woke up, grumpy, tired, and with a foggy mind. And even though you ate healthy, your energy didn’t change.
This is important because it shows that physical energy wasn’t the problem.
Right now you’re reading this because you’re probably lacking both physical and metaphysical energy.
We’re going to dive deep into the reasons you lack physical energy and help you find simple solutions to wake up with energy and keep it throughout the day.
On the metaphysical energy side of things, I’m going to stay in my lane and speak to what I know best. That’s not the metaphysical. If you’re more curious about this, these are a few of my favorite books:
Reality Transurfing by Vadim Zeland
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
One thing I can confidently say is, the more consistent you are with healthy habits, the more your metaphysical energy grows. I don’t necessarily know why but I’ve felt it and have seen it countless times in women I’ve worked with.
To help understand the best ways to increase your physical energy, it helps to understand where this energy comes from (and where it doesn’t).
Where Does Energy Come From?
When most women want more energy, they reach for coffee, energy teas, supplements, and B12 shots.
For one, anything with caffeine (coffee, tea, etc) doesn’t actually give you energy. Instead, it blocks the signal to your brain that you’re tired.
And second, notice that the most common ways people try to “get more energy” are things external to your body. They’re things you need to buy, take, or consume.
The problem with this is, if you want all-day energy, it doesn’t come from something outside of your body.
It comes from within.
The real reason you don’t have energy? Your body is leaking it.
Imagine you live in Alaska and you’re trying to heat your house. No matter how high you raise the temperature, your house won’t get warmer. When you stop and look around, you realize you’re losing heat because all the doors and windows in your house are open.
This is what’s happening inside your body causing your energy to drain.
Let’s look at the top 3 most common culprits
This Is Where You’re Losing Energy
Imagine your energy levels as a battery. Everything you do throughout the day either charges your battery or drains it.
There are 3 particular areas of health that drain your battery the most.
The first is blood sugar.
Even if you’re not diagnosed as diabetic, fluctuating blood sugar can zap your energy. This happens when:
you go too long without eating
drink coffee on an empty stomach
eat highly processed, high-sugar foods
Instead of giving you energy, your body has to spend it stabilizing your blood sugar...ultimately draining your battery.
The second area is poor gut health.
Poor gut health hits your battery in two different ways…meaning it drains even faster. The same way leaving all the apps running at once on your iPhone does.
It first drains your battery by inefficiently digesting and breaking down food. This could be from a lack of stomach acid allowing undigested food to make it through your stomach. Possibly from not chewing your food enough or eating foods that are hard to digest.
Poor gut health also drains your battery by not being able to utilize the nutrients in the food you eat. Even if you eat healthy, your body can't properly absorb the fuel. It has to work harder, and less efficiently, to get what it needs.
The third area of health that drains your battery is sleep.
This could be from a lack of sleep, getting less than 7 hours per night. Or from poor quality of sleep, waking frequently throughout the night.
For many women over 40, it’s a combination of both.
Getting a restful, deep 8 hours of sleep is like charging your phone’s battery to 100%.
But getting 6 hours of sleep where you toss and turn all night is like charging the battery to 50%. By 12pm, your phone’s dead and you need to charge it again. For you, you need a nap or a coffee.
Now that you know where the biggest energy leaks are, let’s fix them.
How To Get Your Energy Back
Let's take this one at a time.
Blood Sugar
Eat a high-protein breakfast within 30-60 minutes of waking up
Include at least a fist-sized portion of protein with each meal
Go for a 10-minute walk after eating
(this lowers your blood sugar the same as medication)
Strength train 2-3 times per week
If you do these 4 things, you'll notice steadier energy without the afternoon crash.
Gut Health
Choose easily digested foods (cooked veggies over raw, for example)
Eat slower and chew your food more thoroughly
Avoid processed foods as much as possible
Small changes here make a big difference in how efficiently your body takes energy from food.
Sleep
Keep your room cold. Crack a window or turn on a fan.
Make your room as dark as possible or wear a sleep mask
Set an alarm 1 hour before bed as a reminder to wind down
Swap screens (TV, phone, laptop) for a book, stretching, or journaling
Eat a small snack before bed of Greek yogurt with fruit and a pinch of sea salt
As if with everything I always suggest, the goal is progress, not perfection.
Pick one area you want to focus on first and start with the action steps above. From those few things alone you’ll be blown away at how much more energy you have throughout the day.
Remember, more energy doesn't require anything from outside your body. You don't have to buy, take, or drink anything special. You can simply focus on fixing the leaks and keeping your battery charged all day.
As a woman over 40, your body and health can feel largely out of your control…
But there's more in your control than you think ◡̈
